COMEX 2012

COMEX 2012

The last time I recalled going to an IT Fair and actually purchasing something for myself is a good 4 years back? I bought a WD Cavier Green, 640GB HDD & a AC Ryan Clock/Radio/Media player.

Last Sunday, I went with a mission, the mission to get not one but TWO LED FULL HD Television set. 1 for the living room and the other for my bedroom.

Here's the mission briefing

Primary Objective: > 37" FULL HD LED TV w/ 100hz refresh rate min.
Secondary Objective: 32" FULL HD LED TV w/ 100hz refresh rate min

Constraints: No smaller than 37" for Living room and 32" for bedroom with budget no more than $1,200.00NETT

Teammates: Mom + Dad

Equipment: Myself, 7year old Nissan Sunny, $~ because mom is there.

Location: Suntech Convention Hall 401 - 406 @ 1200hrs

==========================

On route to the destinaton, jam was already forming at the Rochor Road exit of the AYE, the master tactician decide against queueing like the rest and approached the next exit via Fort Road and re-route to Suntec Convention Hall. This proves to be a great move as we reached the destination ahead of schedule, we even managed to park right beside the lift that brings us straight to the convention hall.

As usual the lifts are packed, waited for the 7th lift before making our way up the ridiculously packed lift. Onwards soldiers !

11:42am @ the entrance, 11:57am, the guards let us through and the battle begins !!

Looking at the floor plan for COMEX, i was shocked, no booths for Sharp, Panasonic and Phillips, my oh my...

We went ahead to Courts and then Harvey Norman booths, with couldn't care less salesperson, we left. I guess most of the older models are already snapped up and most of them hit their max commission scale hence the attitude.

Finally we reached Audio House, they were the main distributor of Samsung panels hence he was setting up the small "stage" for his "lelong" session. Set my parents there and I moved on to check out the other panels and none matched my required price and specs so I went back to the lelong session.

The mechanics of this "lelong" seems quite organized and unique. The MC will list out the specifications of the product first, explaining each and every product with demonstration, size, refresh rate, full HD, SMART apps etc.

This is the first product of the day, the Samsung 40" Series 5 FullHD LED SMART TV. Retailing at $2099.00 -->> OMFG it's more than my budget for 2 panels combined!

The freebies were average, an old Pioneer DVD player, universal HDMI cable and a wifi dongle which adds up to about $300 according to them.

Next, the MC asked for the number of people who wish to purchase the TVs as he only has limited sets, only a few raised their hands because well, being Singaporeans, we need time to warm up, only 6 raised their hands and 5 sets was declared available.

Here's the thing, another salesperson will stand right in front of the stage and handout the "buying rights" while the MC flashes the selling price. The offer is only valid for 5secs, we have 5 secs to decide to grab it or not.

Well many were still in a daze while my parents and I were speculating on the price, the mom, said it's $999 because she was looking at the way the guy was writting on the white board, I'd have guessed 1099. Finally we've come to a consensus that any price below $1000 it's ours.

*DING DING DING*

Time seemed to have stopped as the MC repeats the size and model of the panel with it's usual price upteem times till right before he announced

"EIGHT HUN ....."

/me RUNS FORWARD LEAPTS AND GRAB THE "Buying Rights"

I saw the board before he announced it $849.00 NETT

40" EH5000 Series 5 Full HD LED TV

Everyone else was in shock, then everyone follow suite, my parents were laughing, a pig flew today ~

Some auntie went to me, with the rights to buy and asked if it was truly a cheap deal, and that she has been here for the 3rd day already.

Here's the thing, Series 5 is the first few models of SMART TV but not the first model of FULL HD LED, it comes with a not so impressive 100hz refresh rate and a simplistic black thin rectangular frame. At 40" it is the deal of the day.

Rival Phillips 42" LED Full HD 60hz went at $799.00, I will not pay $1 for a 60hz panel, without SMART function too.

So it is definitely not the steal or deal of 2012 BUT a worthwhile purchase for something that is needed at home and not wanted.

Waited for a few other deals with the 32" HDReady panel $499, ridiculous price, i'd just be paying $500 for 6" increase in size, hell no. Left the centre and ended the mission.

Primary objective secured, I could've easily bought the 32" Full HD 100hz panel for $567.00 since my mom's there, but no, I'll not pay for over-priced goods, period

2013, Series 6 panel, WAIT FOR ME !!

Mr Ibrahim, came to my mind. He was quite a good looking Indian back in my primary school days. I've always tried to protect him though I admit to join in bullying him once in a while. Sometimes he'd come to me "begging" to help him or lend him money with his hands in "praying mode". I took pity of him ever since he did that once and when he told me "All i got is 40cents a day and they sto...

The Pioneer LX55 Bluray Player Review

Pioneer Corporations, once the leading company for Home Theatre Systems, Display and Optical players, began to falter when the likes of Samsung, LG, Sharp etc came into picture with lower end products for the mass consumer. Pioneer, who steer clear form the niche market, producing high end products, fell to it's knees, withdrawing from the TVs market and started a joint venture with Sharp, resulted in absolute catastrophe. Pioneer fanboys nicknamed the products "Sharpioneer" A bold direction, right or wrong, there's too much points to take, although myself would 200% standby their decision to continue with making highend products previously, even though they failed eventually. Anyhow, ever since that catastrophic "Sharpioneer" released, tons of consumers ditched their players within days of purchases, the management finally woke the FUCK UP. Director Product Planning and Marketing Pioneer USA, Chris Walker started visiting multiple online forums, gat...
